How To Use Notion

To learn Notion, I would recommend watching Thomas Frank’s YouTube playlist, Notion Fundamentals.

Notion Fundamentals - Learn How to Use Notion

An ongoing playlist going through all the basics of Notion. Learn how to use pages, blocks, links, databases, and more.

Start Building

You now have a couple of options:

  1. You could start completely from scratch, or
  2. You could just use a template.

Building from scratch is not that complicated, but it would be easier just to use a template.

Notion Template

Using a Notion template could not be simpler. You visit the template’s page, hit the duplicate button, and wait for the template to build itself in your workspace.

Here is the template that we are using to build a website for librarians right now:

Welcome to Aslan’s Library | Notion

Welcome to Aslan’s Library! We are a private lending library nestled in the Castle region of Narnia. We have a collection of 150,000 volumes of the best books ever written in or about Narnia, Aslan, the Kings and Queens of Narnia, and the triumph over the White Witch. We are open by appointment on Fridays and Saturdays and would love to welcome your family into our community.

Once the template is added, you can edit it in whatever way you desire.

Publishing Your Site

You now have a couple of options:

Free Super.so Site

This is the route that I recommend you use. The URL will be cleaner, and the site is MUCH more customizable.

To set up your site, follow Super’s instructions. It is not too complicated, and they have a super-easy-to-use documentation site.

Note: To set up a Super Site, you must first publish your site as a Notion Site (Super uses the public URL to create your site)

Super — Create Custom Websites with Notion

Create a custom website in less than a minute with instant page loads, SEO optimization, and customized theming. All your content is kept and managed in Notion so you can focus on creating while Super handles the rest.

Super Docs

Welcome to our documentation site, where you can get an overview of Super’s features and learn how they work. (P.s. this site is built with Super and Notion!)

Free Notion Site

You actually need to do this to set up the other option!

To set up a Free, native Notion site, hit the share button in the top right, hit publish, and you should be good to go!

Note: the url will NOT be pretty: https://thecardcatalog.notion.site/Librarian-Websites-DIY-1f3d7c6ac15d8054b3c2d6b3c0e757d8?pvs=4

Bonus: Fillout Forms are Great!

I use Fillout forms extensively with Notion. Form responses sync to a Notion DB of your choice, they embed very nicely into Notion pages, and, if you are using a paid Super plan, this code would allow you to add pop-up buttons to you page:

Most of Fillout is free. Some features (password pages, etc.) and more submissions per month can be purchased.

Create powerful forms, surveys and quizzes your audience will answer. Store responses directly where you need them.
